THE STORY OF A LIFE

A story that lives on.

Bedia Muvahhit became a lasting presence in the theatre and cinema of republican Türkiye. Born in Istanbul, she is dated to either 1896 or 1897 in different sources. She attended Kadıköy Terakki and Notre Dame de Sion, then taught French at Erenköy Girls’ High School. Her language skills also supported her translations and adaptations of French plays.

In 1923 she played Ayşe in Muhsin Ertuğrul’s Ateşten Gömlek, adapted from Halide Edib Adıvar’s novel. That year she appeared onstage in Ceza Kanunu in İzmir. Beginning as women gained a greater presence on the Turkish stage, her career continued until her retirement from Istanbul City Theatres in 1975. A repertoire ranging from Desdemona in Othello to Lüküs Hayat shows the variety of her work.

Named a State Artist in 1987, Muvahhit died on 20 January 1994. Suna Keskin recalls watching her as a child and dreaming of becoming an actor like her. That memory carries a connection from the audience to the stage. The award given to women actors in her name by Istanbul City Theatres and the Turkish Women’s Union continues that connection through the work of new performers.
